Dental plaque is a dangerous film that resides on your teeth each and every day. It’s not necessarily noticeable, but it can be if you haven’t brushed your teeth for some time. This film covers your teeth and makes them feel fuzzy. If the plaque is there for a long amount of time, your smile is in serious danger.
What causes dental plaque?
Plaque develops on your smile when you consume carbohydrates, like sugars and starches. These foods give the oral bacteria the ammo to attack the smile, which results in the development of acids. Over time, this plaque destroys the tooth enamel and creates tooth decay. If this substance is still not removed from your mouth, it can move into the tooth roots and gums and develop into gum disease.
How do I prevent plaque buildup?
Plaque prevention can be done every day by simply brushing, flossing, and rinsing. Brush your teeth two times a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss your smile at least once a day with a flossing product of your choice. Rinse your mouth daily with antibacterial mouthwash. This rinse will help reduce the bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease. Now remember, these three things do not completely remove the plaque from your smile. The only thing that can do so is a professional dental cleaning performed by a dental team. It is important that you receive a cleaning every six months.
Now that you know the details about plaque, do your best to care for your smile each and every day. If you don’t, things could get messy.
