If you’ve heard all the commercials and seen all the ads about certain dental products supposedly offering a way to battle tartar, but don’t know what the fuss about tartar is, you’re not alone. A lot of people don’t know what tartar is, how it affects oral health, or perhaps more importantly, why you need to worry about it.
That’s why Dr. Jacob Shrayman had his team here at Jacob Shrayman, DDS in Verona, New Jersey, put this piece together – to help shed some light on the truth about tartar.
What is it?
Tartar is what happens when plaque builds up in your mouth and hardens, forming a hard spot of bacteria that’s impossible to remove yourself. Only professionally trained dental workers can remove tartar from your teeth.
What’s the big deal?
So tartar is just a bunch of hardened plaque. That’s not the end of the world, right?
Wrong. Plaque buildup is the first step to developing large cavities, tooth decay, an abscess, or even gingivitis. By not removing plaque thoroughly from your mouth – and this includes by brushing, flossing, and mouthwash use – then you’re effectively inviting bacteria to erode your teeth. Tartar is what happens when plaque is left unchecked and once formed, tartar goes right to work dismantling the health of your teeth.
Obviously, tartar isn’t something you want to let run rampant in your mouth. The negative effects it can have on your oral health are easily seen, and without taking care of it you stand at huge risk of dealing with even more serious oral health problems.
